Description
Leave from Piazza S. Martino (300 mt a.s.l.) and go through a stone archway into Via Carale; walk past the stone-built house which was once a prison, as the ancient grating on the window shows.
Walk along the mule-track and cross the surfaced road; take the path along the Fasciol stream and cross an ancient bridge to arrive at the oratory of Sant'Elisabetta (380 mt a.s.l.). Continue going uphill through luxuriant vineyards and age-old chestnut woods to get to the village of Merro with its stone-built houses, then on to the hamlet of Quartavolo which has a traditional wash-house and a stone fountain in its little square.
Walk on through the village and you will come to the Oratory of Sant'Antonio (480 mt a.s.l.).
Farther on the path levels out amid lovely scenery, taking you to Case Bevilacqua, a hamlet which is now deserted.
From the path there is an excellent view over Masera and Trontano. A little farther on, cross a stream to arrive in Case Ariola, an ancient village where now silence reigns. Look for the fresco of the Madonna of Re (recognisable from the wound on the Virgin's forehead) on one of the buildings.
Continuing on your way, go though a quiet wood of age-old chestnuts to reach the equally silent village of Loraccio.
After this cross a wooden bridge over the Rio Fasciol and you will be on the surfaced road. Go on as far as Ranco Sopra, after which the path leads to Ranco Sotto. Walk through the narrow old lanes to find a little bridge leading to the square of San Rocco (480 mt a.s.l.).
Continuing along the woodland path you will come to a solitary wayside shrine, then to the sunny village of Casa Brencio (440 mt a.s.l.).
After the village the path begins to go downhill skirting the grounds of an old villa, until you arrive in the upper square of Rivoria; as you continue your descent you come to the old winepress, a fountain dated 1937 and the communal bread oven.
Farther on you arrive in the little square of San Giulio in Rivoria (400 mt a.s.l.) with its fountain dated 1839. Walk on to Case Bariino, and after crossing the bridge you will arrive in Rogna, where there is another 1937 fountain. The next village is Cresta, with its Oratory of San Bernardo.
From here the mule-track leads to Menogno, where you should pause to look at the communal oven of 1890 and the recently restored square. From here go back up the mule-track to Menogno Sopra, where there is a newly built wash-house (2004).
Go on as far as Villa Cioia, and take the mule-track descending to the right; here there is a fountain dated 1875, with delicious pure cold water.
The track passes under two stone archways, and leads to Casa Benvenuta. Continue past the fine Town Hall to Casa del Secco. From here take Via Roma to return to the Church square where you started from.
