Description
Leave from the Church square (300 mt a.s.l.) and go through a stone archway into Via Carale, and then Piazza Marconi, surrounded by old houses. Look for the one with a grating, indicating that there was once a prison here. A cobbled road leads uphill to a wayside shrine.
Continue along this road past vineyards to the hamlet of Crana. Continue on this road to the Oratory of San Rocco in Ranco Sotto (480 mt), from where a mule-track leads to Ranco Sopra. Here there is an old water mill, an ancient building with an iron wheel hung on it.
Cross a little bridge to start the last part of the uphill walk, through chestnut woods and accompanied by the sound of the stream.
The path then descends to the "chioso del Moro", a lonely byre in the middle of the woods. Continuing downhill, in 15 minutes you arrive at Casa Brencio (440 mt), surrounded by magnificent vineyards.
From here a fine mule-track takes you to Bondolo. The route continues downhill, giving constantly changing views. The path now runs between two walls and here you have the first glimpse of Villa Caselli in front of you.
The track leads past the Villa, giving a good view of the ancient, beautiful trees which are a feature of its grounds. When you come down on to the main road, take a lane leading from the old part of the village to the new part.
At the end of the lane you will see a stone fountain, and here you take the surfaced road. You will see the church tower at the end of the straight stretch of road. Go past the old dairy and the old theatre, and you are back where you started from.
